Household Garbage Collection
The City of Burlington’s Sanitation Division provides once a week curbside automated garbage collection. Collection days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday depending on your location. An interactive map is available to help you determine your collection day. Additional ways to locate your collection schedule are available here.
The City issues each residential customer one black 95 gallon roll out container that must be placed at the curb by 7:00 AM on your scheduled collection day. City ordinance requires the removal of the container from the curb by 7:00 PM the day of collection. The container must have a clearance of 5 feet on each side and 15 feet above the container to be serviced. Details regarding solid waste collection can be found here in the Solid Waste Guide.
The City provides sanitation services in multi-family developments where collection is feasible. To learn more about this option, follow this link.
Collection schedules are often altered by holidays. Schedule modification are advertised on the City's website homepage, through the City's email notification system, on the City's social media, and in the Times-News. Click here to view a current year holiday calendar to see if a holiday will alter your solid waste collection.
Yard Waste Collection
The Sanitation Division provides yard waste collection on the same day as garbage collection. Yard waste must be at the curbside by 7:00 AM on collection day. Get the details about yard waste collection by following this link.
Bulk Waste Collection
The Sanitation Division provides bulk waste (tree limbs and junk) collection on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on a convenience schedule. Bulk collection trucks collect white goods, large "junk," and yard brush separately. Due to a state-wide landfill ban, Electronic Waste can no longer be collected by the City. Learn more about your options for disposal of Electronic Waste by clicking here. Get the details about bulk waste collection by following this link.
Items Not Collected
Certain items are not collected by the City and should not be placed on the curb. Some of the items not collected are: building, remodeling and contractors waste including wood, automobile parts, tires, batteries, dirt, rock, masonry, sealed containers, liquids, chemicals, hazardous wastes, paints, logs, stumps, fluorescent lights, electronic waste, recyclables and bulk waste from businesses and institutions. If you have specific questions about an item please call 222-5111.
The City contracts with Waste Industries to provide curbside recycling service (corrugated cardboard & chipboard, newspaper, inserts, magazines, phone books, mixed paper, shredded paper, inserts/junk mail, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic milk jugs, plastics labeled #1-#7, soda bottles and water bottles) every other week. Do not place these items in the black City container or yard waste containers. Additional recycling information can be found here. Please direct any recycling questions to Waste Industries at 229-0525.
Electronic Waste Collection Events
Quarterly, the City of Burlington holds FREE E-Waste Recycling days in order to give its citizens an option to keep Electronic Waste out of landfills as per the State Ban. These events have been very successful and well received. The events are held on the 1st Saturday February, June, and October from 9am-2pm at the Public Works Department (234 East Summit Avenue).
