People often use the terms "planning" and "zoning" interchangeably. However, zoning is merely one tool that the planning profession utilizes. Perhaps this confusion is due to the immediate impact that a zoning ordinance and subdivision regulations have on people's everyday lives. Together, these two documents work to promote the health, safety and general welfare of the community.
At the City of Burlington, zoning and subdivision issues are handled by the Planning and Community Development Department. While the Long-Range Planning & Zoning Division administers the zoning and subdivision processes, the Inspections Division enforces the ordinances and regulations. The City of Burlington has also established a Planning and Zoning Commission to advise the Board of Adjustment and City Council on such matters.
